Beagles are known as a barking bread. This can make it tough on you as an owner especially if it has the neighbors in an uproar.
I had a friend who had this very problem. She would leave her Beagle in her apartment during the day when she worked and the Beagle would bark constantly while she was gone. The Beagle did not tear up anything , it would just bark at the slightest noise.
A friend of hers suggested a shock collar. A shock collar is a type of collar that a dog wears that emits a mild shock when the dog barks. This is suppose to train the dog not to bark. She thought, as did I, that this was not a humane way to train her beagle not to bark.
Then she found out about citronella collars. These collars spray citronella at the dog’s face when they bark. Dogs don’t like the citronella so this can eventually help train the dog to stop barking.
My friend had great success with her Beagle and the citronella collar. Some people may think this is a cruel way to train you Beagle not to bark. You should always start with the basics first. Get them plenty of exercise. Make sure you socialize them properly and make sure the Beagle isn’t barking due to separation anxiety.
The citronella collar is just one alternative to Beagle training. You should find one that fits both you and your dog’s needs.

Ideal play or coaching sessions with your Beagle finish with your dog feeling both tired and successful. One technique that accomplishes creating a way of accomplishment in both you and your Beagle, along with imposing obedience, is doing a session or two of Beagle sit-ups. It helps to have a lot of tiny treats readily available for these. At first, you’ll have to provide a little bite after every part of the exercise. In time, your goal can be to finish the entire set prior to a treat being given.
Begin by having your Beagle sit. Once sitting, have him lay, then sit once more and finally stand. This is one Beagle sit-up. The perfect session will be to have your dog repeat this series of moves a complete of 10 times, however at 1st you may only be able to get him to cooperate for one or two. That is okay. Each couple of days add a further turn before he gets his treat till he is doing the complete ten.
This Beagle training reinforces the basic commands of sit, down and stay. If your Beagle has yet to learn these instructions, you will have to work on them at the same time. This enables you to accomplish 2 things at the once. Remember, however, that making an attempt to learn new command is tiring in itself. Adjust the amount of sit-ups appropriately or you are bound to have a terribly frustrated dog.
Beagles love to feel they have made their folks happy. Allowing your dog to combine some of the simplest commands into your play session can make him feel he has accomplished this job and he will be all the more enthusiastic to try to no matter else you’ve got in store for him throughout this time.

I still remember like it was yesterday. I had just bought a new house and my wife and I were looking to fill it with the love from a K-9 friend. Naturally, I went with the quirkiest dog possible. Unknowingly, I also went with one of the hardest dogs to train. My Beagle (Cassandra), urinated, chewed, barked uncontrollably and destroyed anything it could.
As a new pet owner, I wasn’t prepared for the pitfalls of owning a Beagle. Cassandra really took us by surprise; but with a little bit of research, we found five effective methods we used daily when training our Beagle. Whether you are a new buyer or a buyer beware, you will benefit from our tips greatly when beagle training.
1: The Reason Why: Like humans, beagles have certain behaviors. They are good, bad, happy and sad. When training your Beagle you must look at the reasons why they are acting the way they are. Cassandra was in the pound for nearly a year before we rescued her. We found that her constant barking was a direct result of living in a crowded shelter. Once we knew her reasons, we realized why the crate was such a problem throughout the night. Beagle training became easier as we learned more about her.
2: Establishing Yourself as the Leader: Beagles are very pack oriented. They need a sense of belonging and if you give them it, they will love you. But their self-awareness of their position can become a problem in Beagle training. One example is walking the dog. Often, the dog will want to be in front of you. While this may seem harmless to you, the Beagle is developing a pack leader mentality. Get a shorter leash and make sure you are in front. Also, make sure they are the last to enter your house.
3: Not too Much; Not too Little: Training Beagles also means diet control for the dog. If you are a new buyer, you will soon find out that Beagles have an endless pit of a stomach. To be efficient at Beagle training, you must provide the dog with the right amount of energy. That also means sleeping hours as well.
4: Giving them the Attention they Need: That is right. Like people, your Beagle needs attention. Feeling loved, wanted and appreciated will go a long way in Beagle training. Cassandra gets upset when we leave for a vacation. She also acts out at our dog sitter’s house. When they feel neglect, the Beagle training process only becomes harder.
5: No Mixed Messages: Make sure that your Beegle is never confused. One of the hardest parts of training a Beagle is to get them to listen to you. As Beagles become more aware of what is expected of them, they are easier to train. The biggest problem is that people often allow something once in a while or not at all. Do not teach a dog to speak and then get mad when they bark at something.
To be successful at Beagle training, you will need to practice all five suggestions. All of them need to be practiced regularly.

I have two year old beagle that still isn’t potty trained. I have heard from people that beagles are one of the hardest breed to train is this true? What are some good training techniques to train a beagle without getting it professionally trained? I work at home so it is not a issue of being here.
If you work from home — then the issue is that you are not dedicating enough time to training. So, you really have to put some serious time to house-breaking as well as general obedience. I would say that you need to schedule 1 to 2 hours a day. That would be the time spent walking the dog for exercise and potty breaks. Then some time needs to be spent just training obedience. Often it is easier to train if you are signed up for classes outside the home. If you’ve paid out some $$ – you tend to actually attend classes as opposed to thinking about training at home and putting it off. Some schools will tell you – they are not training your dog — they are training YOU to train your dog. Beagles are hounds and Hounds can be a difficult breed to train. They are bred to work on their own and so tend to need a high motivating toy or reward. Figure out what your dog loves (food, tug ball on rope, whatever) Then use this reward when training. I love clicker training as it is really helps the dog understand when they are successful. So – look for some clicker training classes in your area. Potty training – you didn’t say if you have a male or female. Spaying or neutering will help so if your dog is intact — to the vets’s!! I have attached a schedule of potty training — you need to use a crate and confine your dog unless you are paying totally and absolute attention to her/him. But, you should be able to get some results from this within the first week. Don’t move too quickly – your dog has been untrained for a long time – move slowly and expect some feedback from your dog (like a Ar-roo or two!!). Also – a friend had a beagle and it would pee in its crate if there was bedding in it — no bedding, no peeing. So be on the look for odd quirks of beagle behavior like this – and just work past it. Everywhere I read, I hear different theories on how to train my beagle. He is 14 weeks old. Need help on proper crate training etiquette so I can get him house-trained as soon as possible.
I believe in crate training completely. My dogs end up loving their crates and go there to be alone. You’ll get to the point, later in your dog’s life, that you don’t have to close the door on the crate…it is just his bedroom/private space. That said, there are tough times in the beginning stages of crate training, too. He doesn’t want to be locked away in the middle of the night. And you will feel horrible at first. Don’t give in!!! Keep it up and after a week or so, it’ll get better. Don’t give in to his lonely wimpering and barking: keep a light on, and maybe some light music. But in the beginning, you must let him out at least once in the middle of the night. Preferrably, when YOU decide to take him out….not when he is crying. There are books, ect. to help. Good luck!!!

One undisputable fact about Beagles is they know how to use their nose. Whether it is to find trash or a rabbit, Beagles have a keen sense of smell. Their noses are what drives them to search out a particular scent and to follow it. As an owner, you will have a choice to encourage this natural behavior or to try and muffle it. For the sake of your sanity and the Beagle’s I would recommend encouraging it.
Training your Beagle to hunt is a great thing to do and will allow your Beagle to be themselves. And with this type of a dog, training your Beagle to hunt will be really easy. Through a series of games, positive reinforcement and practice, your Beagle will be an expert hunter.
First, try to start them out as early as possible. The younger the Beagle, the easier it is to train them to hunt. Throughout their Beagle training, make sure you get them use to loud bangs. A lot of times, Beagles can be great scent trackers but they are too afraid of the gun. So try to start with them as early as possible.
First start by playing hide and go seek with the various objects that the dogs love. Treats, pig ears, stuffed animals or whatever else the dog loves chewing on would make a good scent for them to follow. Have someone hold them in one room and you drag the object across the floor. Leave a strong scent for them to follow. Then hide is underneath something and yell, “Get it” and let the Beagle go. Instantly you will hear loud and fast sniffing. Their nose is in full force. Once they find it, reward them and continue.
Try doing the same trick but do not drag it on the floor. Rather around in the air. The Beagle will still pick up the scent. The idea is to continuously make it more and more challenging. Go outside and do it in your back yard. Try using a mock squirrel or rabbit toy so your Beagle can get use to the site. The more they do this, the better they will become better at tracking.
Also, let them experience the real thing before bringing them to an open field. Training your Beagle to hunt is about gradually getting them used to doing such a thing. If you do not have a fenced in yard find someone who does. Let the squirrels come out from the trees and let your dog chase them. Open the door and whisper “Get them” and your Beagle will be off howling.
Take your time in training your Beagle dog to hunt. In time, they will learn to obey while finding you your small game. Remember, get them use the sound of a gun well ahead of time and you will have a good hunting buddy.

Before you adopt a Beagle there are some things you need to be aware of and prepare for .You need to understand and be able to work through the most common Beagle behavior problems. If you prepare yourself prior to bringing your Beagle puppy home your life and your Beagle’s life will be less stressful.
First thing to know is that the most Beagle behavior problems are not dangerous to humans and are mainly just annoying. Many problems can be easily deterred or prevent with regular excursive and training. Neutering can also help alleviate some problems.
Unfortunately a lot of Beagle owners get frustrated with their dogs problems and give them up to animal shelters. This can be avoided if they would just take the time to learn and apply proper Beagle training and caring procedures.
One of the more common problems Beagles have is that they tend to wander off. Sometimes neutering can help prevent this, but not always. Beagles don’t just wander off for mating purposes. More often than not they find a scent and follow it wherever it takes them. Sometimes they wander off because they are bored.
You need to make sure your yard has a fence that will keep them on your property. If not an above ground fence an underground fence or just a smaller area or pen that is fenced in. Also make sure they get regular exercise and attention. This will help reduce the boredom/.
Beagles are also known for their grand appetite. They love food more than most dogs. Because of this they have been known to get into garbage cans to look for food. They have also been known to eat anything. Make sure you keep your garbage cans locked or securely closed at all times. You don’t want your Beagle getting a hold of something that is poisonous to them or something that can harm them like a chicken bone.
Another common problem for Beagles is separation anxiety. Separation Anxiety is a problem that is caused by your Beagle being very upset when they are left alone, especially inside your home. They can react in several ways including, constant barking or howling and chewing or destroying things. Tips for handling this is it first make sure you don’t make a big deal or fuss when you leave your Beagle home alone. Just act like everything is OK and normal while you are leaving. Also, put the dog in a crate or area that they think of as their den. You can also leave an old t-shirt that has your smell on it to help relax or comfort him.
Some suggest that leaving a TV or radio on to give them back ground noise that they are used to hearing will also help. Finally leave some chew toys so that they have something to chew on other than your shoes or furniture.
Beagles make great pets if you know in advance what problems may arise and how to solve them. It isn’t always easy but the reward of having a well trained Beagle as a family member is worth the work.
